The Winners Are . . .

Now that the 25 winners of last month's sports trivia quiz have been chosen, we can tell everybody the answers. Here goes:

1. What soccer player has scored more goals in international competition than any other?

b. Mia Hamm. She has scored 128 goals for the United States. Now Hamm plays for the Washington Freedom. You can see her in the Freedom's next home game on July 21 against the San Diego Spirit.

2. The Stanley Cup is awarded to the best team in what sport?

a. Hockey. This year the Colorado Avalanche are playing the New Jersey Devils for the Cup. I think the Avalanche will win.

3. What is Tiger Woods's first name?

c. Eldrick. Earl Woods nicknamed his son "Tiger" in honor of a South Vietnamese lieutenant colonel he served with in the Vietnam War. The colonel's name was Nguyen Phong, but Earl Woods called him "Tiger."

4. President Bush has built what kind of sports field on the White House lawn?

c. T-ball field. The first game was played between two teams from the District of Columbia. The Satchel Paige Little League Red Sox played the Capitol City Little League Rockies. Who won? No one. You don't keep score in T-ball.

5. All the following sports have goalies -- soccer, water polo, field hockey.

a. True. Goalie is always a tough position. But it is really tough in water polo: The goalie has to tread water the whole game.

6. Cal Ripken Jr. is old for a baseball player. How old is he?

b. He's 40. This may be Ripken's last year. He is hitting around .220 and the Orioles are looking for a new third baseman.

7. Alan Webb is the first high school athlete in 34 years to run a mile in under 4 minutes. Where does he live?

b. Northern Virginia. He's a senior at South Lakes High School in Reston. In a meet last Sunday, he ran the mile faster than any high school student ever. His time of 3 minutes 53.43 seconds beat the record by nearly 2 seconds.

8. Deion Sanders of the Washington Redskins is also playing pro baseball. What team does he play for?

b. Cincinnati Reds. But Neon Deion is finding that hitting a baseball is harder that hitting receivers. Sanders is batting about .150.

9. The ball in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is smaller than the ball in the men's National Basketball Association (NBA).

a. True. Most female players have smaller hands than most male players. The smaller ball allows the women to dribble, pass and shoot more easily.

10. Sisters Venus and Serena Williams are terrific athletes in what sport?

c. Tennis. Older sister Venus is rated the second best women's player in the world. Serena is rated seventh.
