I am on vacation. For two weeks, I have nothing better to do but go to the beach, stare at the ocean and ponder some of the great sports questions. So here's what I expect I'll be thinking about as the sun sets and the tide rolls in:

A batted baseball is fair when it hits the foul pole, so why don't
they call it the fair pole?

Did anyone notice that newspapers listed a golfer in the British
Open named Stuart Little? I wonder if he played with really short clubs?

Does anyone call Tiger Woods by his real name (Eldrick)? How about
Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones (Larry)?

And hey, how come fans can yell like crazy when a pitcher goes into
his windup during a baseball game, but can't make a sound when a tennis
player gets ready to serve during a tennis match?

Can swimmers hear people yelling and screaming while they are
swimming?

How can college football teams play in August if their schools
haven't started classes yet?

Why are there no all-girl baseball leagues in our area? Or all-boy
softball leagues?

Do pro basketball players actually think all those tattoos look
good? And who has more tattoos, Allen Iverson or Rasheed Wallace?

Why don't football officials wear helmets to protect their heads?
Same deal with female lacrosse players--where are the helmets?

Can you think of a worse piece of sports equipment than the field
hockey stick? It looks ridiculous. With that short handle and small
blade, I am surprised the players ever get the ball in the net.

Is anyone but my daughter worried that Venus Williams's tennis
dress is going to burst at the seams during a match? The dress looks
more like beach wear than sports wear.

Why do baseball managers and coaches wear uniforms and coaches in
other sports don't? (Not that I want to see a bunch of middle-aged men
wearing basketball tank tops and shorts--I'm just curious.)

Where do sumo wrestlers buy their regular clothes?

Can you believe hockey goalies didn't always wear masks?

Do long-distance swimmers ever pee in the pool?

Why did my mother throw out my baseball cards?
