Planning the Family Discussion Event
Winners Take All Community-Read

A Sample Plan

Who
Third, fourth and fifth graders and their parents and teachers.

Where
Some options: your school's all purpose room, the local library, or the local middle school that the students will attend.

The Setup
Eight people will be assigned to one discussion group (4 children and 4 grownups). Each group will be given a number. Tables will be set up and each one will be marked with a number corresponding to one of the discussion groups. (Instead of numbers, you could use sports teams to identify each group.)

Schedule

  • 7:15pm: Families arrive and are given a number corresponding to the group they are in. Four families are assigned to each group. Tables will be marked by group number (or sports team), and families find their table and take their seats.

  • 7:30 -- 8:30pm: Discussion questions will be on the table. Children will take turns reading the questions and the group will discuss one and then move on to next question. (For Sample Questions click here.)

  • 8:30 - 8:45pm: Wrap-up. Invite kids and grownups to report on some of the interesting ideas that came up in their discussions.

Additional Options:

  • You could serve ballpark franks and chips at 7:00.
  • Invite a local coach to participate.
  • Have members of the business community donate door prizes.

Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan. - Tom Landry
