Short Biography on Fred Bowen

Fred BowenFred Bowen is the author of two series of sports fiction for ages 8 and up (Peachtree Publishers/Atlanta), and No Easy Way, a picture book about Ted Williams, the legendary power hitter for the Boston Red Sox. Fred also writes the Thursday sports column for kids in The Washington Post. "The Score" is available online at: www.washingtonpost.com/kidspost.

His latest series, Fred Bowen Sports Stories, was launched in August 2009. Like his AllStar Sport Story series, his new one combines fast-paced sports fiction with a little sports history and includes a bonus history chapter at the back.

For 13 years, Fred coached kids' baseball, softball, and basketball teams. Some of his stories spring directly from his coaching experience; others from his sports-happy childhood in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

Fred has a degree in history and political science from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from George Washington University. He was a full-time government attorney for many years, but retired in 2008 to focus on his sports writing for kids. He’s been a guest author at lots of schools and conferences across the country, the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, with his wife Peggy Jackson and their daughter. Their son is an assistant coach for a college baseball team. (The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.)
